The Wescor 5100 BXR vapor pressure osmometer requires a sample volume of only 5 microlitres. Precision: +/- 3mOs/kg or better. Process time: 115 seconds. Range: 0-3000mOs/kg. Because the indication is based on the measurement of vapor pressure of the specimen, the method has many advantages over the freezing point depression method. Vapor pressure and freezing point are among the colligative properties of a solution. This instrument determines the osmolality of a solution by sensing the vapor pressure above the solution in a closed chamber. A precision thermocouple hygrometer measures the dew point temperature depression which is a function of the water vapor pressure of the chamber. This measurement is displayed in terms of milliosmoles per kilogram of water. Osmolality is a measure of the total concentration of dissolved particles in a solution, without regard for the homogeneity or the nonhomogeneity of the molecular species, the molecular weights, the particle size or the density. Any substance dissolved in a solvent affects 4 mathematically interrelated characteristics known as colligative properties. These properties and the associated effects are:
a) vapor pressure decreases
b) freezing point decreases
c) boiling point increases
d) osmotic pressure increases
