This SRI 8610 gas chromatograph is an environmental GC system, 8610C chassis, with PID (Photo Ionization Detector), FID (Flame Ionization Detector) and DELCD (Dry Electrolytic Conductivity Detector). Use of the PID is mandated in several EPA methods (8021, TO-14, etc.) because of its sensitivity and selectivity. Detection limits for aromatics are in the low picogram (ppb) range. Because it is non-destructive, it is often run in series with other detectors. FID is the most commonly used GC detector, responding linearly from its minimum detectable quantity of about 100 picograms to almost 100%. The FID responds to any molecule with a carbon-hydrogen bond, but not at all, or poorly, to compounds such as H2S, CCl4, or NH3. The FID response is very stable from day to day, and is not susceptible to contamination from dirty samples or column bleed. The series DELCD Detector is useful for low-level detection of chlorinated and brominated solvents in environmental samples and other trace analyses. While less sensitive than an ECD detector, it is much more selective to halogens and blind to oxygen, eliminating interferences which would complicate ECD analysis. This SRI 8610 GC has a cold on-column injector for packed and capillary columns, in addition to an automated dual trap purge and trap concentrator for water and soil (in water) samples. It appears to be equipped with a 30M CarboWax type medium film polar column. It also appears to be equipped with the 4 channel serial data system (Windows compatible). A very compact system compared to comparable laboratory GCs from other manufacturers, but it is large enough and flexible enough to perform an amazing variety of applications.
