Accuracy to +/-0.002 refractive unit; needs only 1uL sample. Determine relative optical dispersion, sugar concentration and total solids in preserves; identify organic compounds, etc., over 1.30 to 1.90 N-range, or 0 to 80% sucrose range. Unique illuminated scale ensures maximum visibility. In operation, lamp casts light beam through 2mm aperture to the eye. Fixed glass plate with plane, parallel faces and attached glass prism rest over aperture, forming small sample well. Light beam passing through sample well provides clear illuminated image of scale plus virtual image (due to refraction through sample prism). Solutions with Refractive Index less than glass produce virtual image above slit in scale. Refractive Indices greater than glass produce virtual images below slit.
