The New Brunswick Scientific Biotran II automated colony counter is a precision instrument designed to automate bacterial colony counting in the laboratory. A high resolution vidicon TV camera system (not included) is coupled to a 4-digit numerical display to count colonies, particles, plaques or any distinct separately bound group of positive or negative areas in a field. To verify the count and aid in initial set-up, an enlarged view of the petri dish or other sample holder appears in a viewing monitor. Each colony is indicated with a white marker dot confirming that the colonies are detected. This instrument can distinguish between microbial colonies and smaller particulate matter in the agar. Adjustment of the SIZE control allows the operator to discriminate between colonies and smaller particles, ignoring the extraneous matter. Colonies as small as 0.2mm in diameter and population densities of up to 999 per plate can be counted in less than a second. The Biotran II is capable of counting colonies spaced as closely as 0.3mm on a variety of different agar preparations. Monitor & printer are not included.
