This BetzDearborn Bioscan system is intended for use in the assessment of biomass levels. Tests for presence of ATP. ATP stands for Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). This is a high energy compound that serves as the principle carrier of biologically useful energy in all living cells. ATP is produced only in living cells. The amount of ATP within a cell is proportional to cell size and cell activity. When cells die, the amount of ATP within the cell declines. In cooling water systems, the amount of ATP is proportional to cell numbers and activity (also referred to as total biomass). BIOSCAN is the ATP monitoring system for the BetzDearborn Water Management Group. BIOSCAN consists of a luminometer and sampling pens for measuring the amount ATP in water or on surfaces. The BIOSCAN luminometer is a robust, lightweight, fully portable photometer that measures light produced by the reaction of ATP with the firefly reagents. Sampling and light production take place in a special pen (additional cost of per pack of 10), consisting of a sampling stick, cuvette, and reagents. The sampling stick has ridges which pick-up a defined volume of water sample. The stick transfers the sample into the cuvette portion of the pen where it is mixed with buffer. Reagents released into the cuvette from the cap of the sampling pen react with ATP. The pen is then inserted into the luminometer and a light measurement is made. Each BIOSCAN pen performs one test. There are no reagents to hydrate and BIOSCAN involves no pipetting. Reagent waste is eliminated. Free and Total ATP pens are available.
