The Corning 165/2 pH blood gas analyzer measures pH, PCO2, PO2 within 90 seconds on a single whole blood sample. Special emphasis has been placed on simplicity from an operational and maintenance standpoint with no loss in performance. A number of unique features have been incorporated into the instrument design. All measuring probes are located in a single, solid-state temperature-controlled sample chamber. This permits single sample insertion, eliminating the need to split blood samples. An efficient semi-automatic flushing system is used to ensure complete removal of the sample from the chamber. A gas humidification and delivery system controlled at 37C is included to minimize equilibration time (gases used to facilitate this feature are not included). The Corning 165/2 incorporates a calculator, which accurately computes values for anaerobic plasma bicarbonate and total CO2 from the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation. Calculation of base excess requires consideration of the buffering capacity of hemoglobin. The Hb value is entered into the calculator by a front panel dial.
